The driver told police he heard multiple "pops," which he initially thought were gunshots, while driving northbound on Phillips Roads toward Baier Avenue in Franklin around 11 p.m., Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said.
After hearing something strike his vehicle, the Somerset man and his passenger realized the noises were gunshots, Robertson said alongside county and township officials.
The vehicle was damaged by several bullet holes and 27 shell casings were found in the area, police said.
It was undetermined if the victims in the vehicle were the intended targets, authorities said.
